Empangeni Multi-User Logistics Hub

Rock IT Mining Pty Ltd secured a significant partnership with Transnet SOC Ltd by being awarded a long-term lease to operate the Empangeni Multi-User Logistics Hub (EMULH). This logistics hub specialises in multiuser bulk and break-bulk commodity handling, which is crucial for efficiently managing various types of materials and goods.

The Facility functions as an intermodal for both rail and road and services as a hub connecting the port activities with common user facilities, mines and transport operators in the hinterland.

Operations Model

Entry & Exit:
  • Entry Gate: Vehicles enter the facility through a controlled entry point, which may involve security checks and documentation.

  • Traffic Management: Signs and road markings often guide vehicles to ensure smooth flow and avoid congestion.

  • Exit Gate: Exiting vehicles pass through an exit gate, potentially with final checks to ensure all protocols are followed.

Receiving Area:
  • Unloading Zones: Designated areas where goods are offloaded from incoming vehicles.

  • Inspection and Recording: Materials are inspected for quality and quantity upon arrival, with records updated in the inventory system.

  • Sorting: Goods may be sorted based on type, destination, or priority before being moved to storage.

Handling and Storage:
  • Bulk Storage Areas: Large zones where goods are stored, possibly in heaps, containers, or racks, depending on their nature.

  • Inventory Management: Inventory systems track the location and quantity of stored items, facilitating efficient retrieval.

  • Security and Safety: Storage areas often have security measures and safety protocols to protect materials.

Processing Area:
  • Material Handling: Some goods may require processing or preparation before shipping, such as mixing, packaging, or labelling.

  • Quality Control: Ensures all processed materials meet required standards before proceeding to the next stage.

Loading Area:
  • Preparation for Dispatch: Goods are organised and prepared for loading based on delivery schedules and destinations.

  • Loading Operations: Efficient loading techniques optimise space and ensure cargo safety during transit.

  • Documentation: Necessary shipping documents are prepared and confirmed before vehicles leave the facility.

Transport Links:
  • Road Network: Access to well-maintained roads facilitates the timely transport of goods to ports, distribution centres, or customers.

  • Railway Sidings: EMULH will participate in a short-mile shunt from EMULH to Richards Bay port

  • Coordination with Transport Services: The facility may coordinate with various transport providers to ensure timely pickups and deliveries

EMULH has designed a practical model that requires aligning it closely with strategic goals to enhance efficiency and value delivery, guided by principles such as strategic alignment, customer-centricity, and adaptability

EMULH Solutions Overview

EMULH’s implementation of a dry port strategy aims to enhance the export efficiency of minerals by streamlining the entire process from mining to shipping at the port. This strategy encompasses the following key components:

  • Storage and Handling: At the EMULH, minerals are stockpiled in preparation for loading, allowing for better management of inventory and ensuring a steady flow of materials to meet market demands

  • Short-mile Rail or Road Delivery: The minerals are loaded onto railway wagons, utilising the existing rail infrastructure to transport the materials to the port for export. This method is typically more economical for bulk shipments compared to road transport

  • Port Services: EMULH’s comprehensive port services at Richards Bay port significantly enhance operational capabilities for clients involved in bulk commodities transport. By focusing on cargo handling, storage, logistics coordination, customs clearance, maintenance, and advisory services, EMULH contributes to a streamlined and effective port environment that benefits all stakeholders in the supply chain

Empowering communities through sustainable and efficient supply chain solutions.
